Inside Out Project Juarez

[English]  Inside Out Project was created by french artist JR, whose idea was to portrait people from a particular region, mainly conflict or marginated zones to post them later on in big format around the city causing a positive visual public impact. The first time I heard about JR was on a TED podcast, of which I am a fan (if you haven’t seen the talks please visit their official website) where he was the 2011 TED Prize winner; on his talk he mentions the Inside Out Project site and invites people to contribute and I considered the idea of gathering a couple of friends to help me out and do it, because it shares the same objectives of why I started People of the Border. Unfortunately I had two jobs, I got into school, among many more things and I ran out time.

Just last Wednesday during the FICH, Monica appeared talking about the Inside Out Project in Ciudad Juarez and they presented JR’s trailer. Monica is a professional photographer located in New York, but who grew up in the region and she has been successful in a short period of time with exhibitions in Mexico, Spain, Germany, Italy and the US also winning important recognitions. However, this time is not about Monica the successful woman, it’s about Monica the dreamer and simple person that wants to fight to change a place she loves, because she does not forget that her city needs her and always awaits her with arms wide open. She was kind to let me take some portraits of her and this is one of my favorites. ■

[Español]  Inside Out Project fue creado por el artista francés JR, cuya idea consiste en retratar personas de una región particular, principalmente de zonas en conflicto o marginadas para después postearlas en gran formato alrededor de la ciudad que causen un impacto visual público positivo. La primera ocasión que supe de JR fue a través de los podcast de TED, de los cuales soy seguidor (si no han tenido oportunidad de escuchar las conferencias visiten el sitio oficial) y del cual resultó ganador del Premio TED 2011; en su plática menciona la página de Inside Out Project e invita a personas a contribuir y consideré tratar de juntar a mis amigos para que me ayudaran a realizarlo puesto que coincide con los objetivos por los que empecé Gente de la Frontera. Desgraciadamente tenia dos trabajos, inicie la escuela, entre mil cosas más y el tiempo no alcanzó.

Justo el miércoles pasado durante el FICH, Mónica apareció platicando de Inside Out Project en Ciudad Juárez y además presentaron el trailer de JR. Mónica es una fotógrafa profesional que radica en Nueva York, pero que creció en la región y ha sido exitosa en poco tiempo destacando con exposiciones en México, España, Alemania, Italia y Estados Unidos consiguiendo premios mundiales. Sin embargo esta ocasión no se trata de la Mónica exitosa, sino de la Mónica soñadora y sencilla que quiere luchar por transformar el lugar que quiere, que no olvida que su ciudad la necesita y que siempre la espera con los brazos abiertos. Me permitió tomarle algunas fotografías y esta es una de mis favoritas. ■
