Warrior | Guerrero

[English]  The other day on my way home I found Tomas Campos on the “Gran Soccer 7” field. Tomas is a professional soccer player, he served several years as the left wing-back and midfielder for Cruz Azul as well as playing with the Mexican National Team. He was later transferred to Jaguares and Tigres and later to Indios de Juarez while still competing in Primera A or Mexican Second Division in 2008, that same year they won the championship against Dorados and six months later the promotion to Primera Division or First Division beating club Leon.

He told me that he plays since he was 5 years old and by the age of 14 he was already a professional player in the Third Division. I have an admiration for his style of play, because he is a fair player on the opponent and always goes with the same enthusiasm if the match goes in favor or against. Tomas is a very simple and humble man and as someone who wants to overcome, has also worked hard to progress and he had the strength to climb to get to one of the highest ranked teams in Mexico and also earn the right to represent the country on international matches. Today he is a certified coach and also teaches soccer clinics helping many young kids who come full of hope to accomplish things as he has done.

A while ago I read an interview made by a sports magazine and when they asked him about the city he always had great comments about how people here embraced him and how good he felt in Ciudad Juarez. As we talked we both agreed that the People of the Border is noble and special; proof that you were always sincere is that you are still here with us. ■

[Español]  El otro día camino a casa encontré a Tomás Campos en la cancha de "Gran Soccer 7". Si no lo han reconocido, Tomás es jugador profesional de fútbol, jugando varios años en Cruz Azul como lateral y volante por la izquierda además de participar con la Selección Nacional Mexicana. Posteriormente fue cedido a Tigres y a Jaguares de donde después llegaría a los Indios de Juárez cuando aún competían en Primera A durante el 2008; ese mismo año Indios consiguió el campeonato ante Dorados y seis meses después lograría el ascenso a Primera División venciendo al club Leon.

Me contó que juega desde los 5 años y a los 14 ya era jugador profesional en las filas de la Tercera División. Tengo una admiración por su estilo de juego, porque es un jugador limpio sobre el rival y más que nada aguerrido que siempre va con las mismas ganas si el partido va en contra o a favor. Tomás es sumamente sencillo y como alguien que desea superarse, también ha tenido que trabajar duro para progresar y tuvo la fuerza de escalar hasta llegar a uno de los equipos de mayor jerarquía en México y además ganar el derecho de representar al país de forma internacional. Hoy también es director técnico certificado e imparte clínicas de futbol ayudando a muchos jóvenes que llegan llenos de ilusión para lograr cosas como él lo ha hecho.

Hace tiempo leí una entrevista que le realizó una revista deportiva y cuando le preguntaban acerca de la ciudad siempre tuvo comentarios buenos acerca como las personas lo han recibido y de lo bien que se sentía en Ciudad Juárez. Mientras platicamos ambos coincidimos en que la Gente de la Frontera es noble y especial; prueba de que siempre fuiste sincero es que continuas aquí con nosotros para salir adelante. ■

Hero | Héroe

[English]  U.S. Armed Forces, also known as Army, has Fort Bliss located here since 1849 extending from the county of El Paso to Dona Ana, one of the biggest in the country, so it is common for us to have friends or relatives in the army.

I decided to go with my camera to the last Veterans Day parade and suddenly I was taking pictures next to the main stage. Raul then approached to greet me and asked me if I was from the media, but I said that I was just there to take photos for fun, which allowed us to initiate a more casual and friendly conversation. He told me that he attended Bowie, the second oldest high school in the city and before graduating he enlisted in the Army, being deployed to Germany during World War II as part of the Seventh Army Command that also ended in Berghof. Later he studied at the Texas Western College, nowadays known as UTEP and also participated in campaigns in Vietnam. The most important recognitions I can see from his ribbons are the Legion of Merit and the Distinguished Flying Cross achieved through 34 years of service.

The impeccable uniform he was wearing is the same which he used during the World War. But what really surprised me was his friendly and simple way to treat people, his correct and educated attitude and seeing the respect and admiration on which everybody directed toward him by the ethics and great values that he represent, for me that is what a true hero is, ret. [Español]  La Fuerza Armada de Estados Unidos, conocida también como Army, cuenta aquí con Fort Bliss desde 1849 abarcando desde el condado de El Paso hasta Doña Ana, uno de los mas grandes del país, por lo que para nosotros es común tener amigos o familiares en el ejército.

El pasado desfile del Día de los Veteranos decidí dar una vuelta con mi cámara y sin darme cuenta repentinamente ya estaba tomando fotos junto al estrado principal. Fue entonces cuando Raúl se acerco a saludarme y me preguntó si iba de algún medio, pero le respondí que solo estaba ahí para tomar fotos por gusto, lo cual nos permitió iniciar una plática más informal y amistosa. Entre lo que pudimos hablar me comentó que estudió en Bowie, la segunda preparatoria mas antigua de la ciudad y antes de terminar se enlistó en el ejercito, siendo desplegado en Alemania durante la II Guerra Mundial como parte del Seventh Army Command que llegó hasta Berghof. Posteriormente estudió en Texas Western College, actualmente UTEP y también participó en campañas de Vietnam. De los reconocimientos mas importantes que puedo distinguir de sus bandas, cuenta con la Legión de Merito y la Cruz de Vuelo Distinguida conseguidas a través de 34 años de servicio.

El uniforme impecable que portaba es el mismo con el cual estuvo durante la Guerra Mundial. Sin embargo, lo que realmente me sorprendió fue su forma tan cordial y sencilla de tratar a las personas, su actitud intachable y educada y ver el respeto y admiración con la que todos se dirigen hacia él por su ética y grandes valores, ese para mí es un verdadero héroe, ret. Coronel Raúl Garibay. ■

Mestre Capoeira

[English]  Capoeira is an art developed in Brazil with roots in Africa, when slaves were taken to America to do heavy physical work during the portuguese reign in the XVI century. The first time that I knew about it was at the beginning of the 90’s thru the movie “Only the Strong”, which received very different critics, but I found it interesting and since then I recall the song “paranaue”, the berimbau and this afro-brazilian tradition.

Jorge is a Mestre or Master of capoeira who teaches the discipline, respect and culture with the support of this practice that mixes music, dance and martial arts with a lot of acrobatic moves. He commented that the group is composed mostly of young people and even teach them portuguese because they consider important that every participant can understand the meaning of the songs they sing, which I personally think that it gives a very integral touch. Congratulations Jorge for the work you do.

For many african slaves this represented a motivation to confront the situation in which they were, a tool to defend themselves and it allowed them to gather masquerading its practice as a cultural ritual in which the colonist did not interfere. It gave the slaves a way to form ties that united them until they finally got their freedom centuries later. ■

[Español]  Capoeira es un tipo de arte desarrollado en Brasil con raíces en África, practicado por los esclavos llevados a realizar trabajos forzados por el reino portugués durante el siglo XVI. La primera vez que supe acerca de ella fue a principios de los 90’s a través de la película “Only the Strong”, que recibió criticas muy variadas, pero a mi me pareció interesante y desde ese entonces siempre recuerdo el canto de “paranaue”, el berimbau y esta tradición afro-brasileña.

Jorge es un Mestre o Maestro de capoeira que busca inculcar disciplina, respeto y cultura mediante esta practica que fusiona la música, danza, arte marcial con muchos movimientos acrobáticos. Me comentó que el grupo se compone mayormente de jóvenes y que incluso se les enseña portugués porque se considera importante que también entiendan lo que significan los cantos que realizan, que en lo personal considero que le da un toque muy integral. Enhorabuena Jorge por el trabajo que realizas.

Para muchos esclavos africanos representó una motivación para enfrentar la situación en que se encontraban, una herramienta para defenderse y les permitió agruparse disfrazando su practica como un ritual cultural en el que los colonizadores no interferían. Así formaron vínculos que los unieron hasta que finalmente consiguieron su libertad siglos mas tarde. ■

Dream Builder | Constructor de Sueños

[English]  From 1882 to 1974 Ciudad Juarez, Chihuahua and El Paso, Texas were united through the Trolley service that moved people between both cities that got around to work, study, shop or visit family and friends. It was the first system of transportation in the world that, besides connecting two cities, communicated two countries.

With this idea, Peter starter the artistic project El Paso Transnational Trolley suggesting the fictitious campaign that revived the Trolley as a symbol of the relationship between the two cities; a relation of hope for a better future thru the cultural, intellectual and economical bonds of our regions, if you happen to be in Downtown El Paso you can notice some of the posters and advertisements on several streets. Part of the activities consisted on taking about 2000 portraits to make a mosaic producing the big image of a Trolley that you will be able to see opened and exhibited this weekend during Chalk the Block on Mills and Oregon streets, so please make sure you visit.

Peter contacted Monica of Inside Out Juarez (you can see her in the past post) because both pretended to show the real faces of this region thru art. I meet Monica while I took her portrait for People of the Border and thru her I meet Peter… that made me think that we started these different projects that share the same goal without knowing each other and thus made me aware that at the end we are not alone, because many more people are willing to fight for what they love and have an active participation to improve the community. It gives me hope knowing that there is a better tomorrow, that we are not divided as people from Juarez and El Paso, but united as People of the Border. ■

[Español]  De 1882 a 1974 Ciudad Juárez, Chihuahua y El Paso, Texas eran unidas a través del servicio del Trolley que movía a personas entre ambas ciudades que circulaban para trabajar, estudiar, comprar o visitar familiares y amigos. Fue el primer sistema de transporte en el mundo que, además de conectar dos ciudades, comunicó dos países.

Con esta idea, Peter inicio el proyecto artístico de El Paso Transnational Trolley planteando una campaña ficticia en donde se revive el Trolley como un símbolo de unión entre las dos ciudades; una unión de esperanza por un mejor futuro mediante el lazo cultural, intelectual y económico de nuestras regiones, si recorren algunas partes del centro de El Paso podrán notar algunos de los carteles y publicidad colocados en distintos puntos. Parte de las actividades consistió en tomar cerca de 2000 retratos y crear un mosaico formando la imagen de un Trolley que podrán ver inaugurado y exhibido durante Chalk the Block en las calles Mills y Oregon, asegúrense de visitarlo.

Peter contactó a Mónica de Inside Out Juarez (que pueden ver en el post anterior) puesto que ambos quieren mostrar mediante el arte los verdaderos rostros de esta región. Yo conocí a Mónica al tener oportunidad de retratarla para Gente de la Frontera y por ella tuve trato con Peter… lo que me hizo reflexionar que los tres iniciamos proyectos separados que comparten el mismo objetivo sin conocernos y me hizo darme cuenta que al final no estamos solos, pues hay más personas dispuestas a luchar por lo que quieren y participar de forma activa para mejorar la comunidad. Me brinda esperanza saber que hay un mejor mañana, que no estamos separados como gente de Juárez y El Paso, sino unidos como Gente de la Frontera. ■

Champions | Campeones

[English]  Meet Zeus and Daniel; if you are still wondering… Zeus is the pitbull and Daniel is the human. Together they ran today’s Dog-a-thon (like a marathon, but with dogs), organized by APRODEA (Pro Animal Defense Association), being the winners of the big dogs category after a 1.5mi course.

Zeus is a peculiar pitbull because aside from its obvious nature it is a very educated and obedient dog, with a look that invites you to reach him without fear. And like tons of times the things around us are reflect of ourselves, also Zeus is reflect of Daniel, who is kind and easy to get along with. After seeing both together you can realize that the bonds of friendship and affection surpass our comprehension.

Congrats for the victory! ■


[Español]  Les presento a Zeus y Daniel; si aún se están preguntando… Zeus es el pitbull y Daniel es el humano. Juntos corrieron el Perrotón (como un maratón, pero con perros) del día de hoy, organizado por APRODEA (Asociación Pro Defensa Animal), resultando ganadores de la categoría de perros grandes después un recorrido de 2.5km.

Zeus es un pitbull peculiar puesto que a pesar de su obvia naturaleza es un animal muy educado y obediente, con un semblante que invita a acercarte sin temerle. Y como en tantas ocasiones las cosas que nos rodean son reflejo de nosotros mismos, de igual forma Zeus es en gran parte el reflejo de Daniel, quien es cordial y sencillo. Después de verlos juntos uno puede notar de que los lazos de amistad y de cariño van más allá de lo que podemos entender.

Les Bleus

[Español]  Este sábado acudí al Chupacabras 100km, una carrera ciclista que se realiza anualmente y es uno de los eventos deportivos de mayor renombre en la región atrayendo a personas de todo el mundo.  Según escuché esta edición contó con alrededor de 2000 competidores.

Durante uno de los puntos del recorrido tuve el placer de encontrarme con Norma y Raúl, una pareja realmente extraordinaria.  Son de esas personas que uno no necesita conocer para saber lo especiales y buenas que son, porque la bondad y la amabilidad son cosas que se irradian hasta en gestos tan sencillos como nuestra sonrisa o una cálida mirada. Además llamó mi atención las playeras que vestían, las cuales tenian esta silueta de la mascara de Blue Demon y definitivamente tenía que tomarles este retrato.

Me pareció tan grato que alentaran a todos los competidores, aplaudiendo y dando animo a todos los ciclistas que pasaban por donde nos encontrábamos y me conmovió tanto ver a un miembro de su familia que estaba en el curso de la carrera llegar y pararse con ellos, intercambiar algunas palabras y continuar el recorrido.  Es innegable que las personas que nos quieren siempre estarán ahí para nosotros sin importar la situación, listos para apoyarnos sin esperar nada… sin condición. ■

[English]  This Saturday I went to the Chupacabras 100km, a cyclist race held annually and one of the best sporting events around the region bringing people from all over the world.  I heard that this edition had 2000 competitors (more or less).

On one of the points during the route I had the pleasure to find Norma and Raúl, such an amazing couple.  They are these kind of people that you don’t need to meet to know how special and good they are, because goodness and kindness are things we irradiate with simple actions like a smile or a warm look.  Besides they were wearing these cool t-shirts that caught my attention with Blue Demon's silhouette (a mexican wrestler), so I definitely had to take this portrait of both.

It was so nice that they were cheering and applauding to every cyclist going by our location and I was moved when I saw one of their family members on-course-of-the-race arrive and stop with them, exchange a few words and get back on route.  It is undeniable that the people who love us will always be there for us no matter the reason, ready to support us without a payback… without condition. ■

Bicentenario | Bicentennial

[English]  The centennial is the celebration of an event that happened a hundred years before. On September 16th Mexico commemorated 200 years of the beginning of the fight for its Independence from Spain, it was even named Nueva España (or New Spain) after it was conquered.

During a celebration festival of the bicentennial I found Juan, who was the master of ceremonies. All the time he goes to conduct an event you will find him properly characterized according to the occasion, and as usual this was not the exception. I think he is a very interesting person because he always has a positive attitude and a lot of times you can see him collaborating in altruistic activities, like collecting toys for tots of low resources.

Juan taught a class I attended while I was in school and something that I found curios is that although I am almost sure he cannot recall my name, every time he sees me he salutes me like we have known each other from life. This makes me see that you do not need much to leave an impression to others, because our actions speak more for ourselves, more than anything we can say with words. ■

[Español]  El centenario es la fecha en que se cumplen cien años de algún acontecimiento. El 16 de septiembre México conmemoró 200 años del inicio de la lucha por la Independencia del país del dominio Español, incluso tenía el nombre de Nueva España después de su conquista.

Durante un festival de celebración del bicentenario me topé con Juan, quien fungió como maestro de ceremonias. Siempre que asiste para conducir una ceremonia lo encontrarán personificado acorde a la ocasión y como es costumbre, esta vez no fue la excepción. Me parece una persona interesante porque todo el tiempo tiene una actitud positiva y lo verán muchas ocasiones colaborando en actividades altruistas, como en colectas de juguetes para niños de escasos recursos.

Juan me dió una clase hace varios años y algo que me parece curioso, es que aunque estoy seguro que no sabe mi nombre, siempre que nos topamos me saluda como si nos conociéramos de toda la vida. Esto me hace darme cuenta que no hace falta de mucho para dejar una buena impresión en otros, pues nuestras acciones hablan más de nosotros, que cualquier cosa que podamos decir con palabras. ■

Believer | Creyente

[English]  I heard on the news this morning that the Saint Lawrence feast was about to begin today (better known as Laurentius in latin or Lorenzo in italian and spanish). He is one of the most venerated saints around the border and even a church was built upon his name, and fortunately this church was on my route today and I stopped as I saw a huge crowd already congregated all over the streets that surrounded the building. Saint Lawrence was a deacon and had the job of the Catholic Church treasurer in the era of the Valerian prosecutions which later lead him to died tortured on a huge grill on August 10 of the year 258.

On this church I meet this man, a "Matachin". Matachines are very popular on both cities because they are religious dancers that venerate God, the Virgin or Saints, so they are always present at these celebrations. I had little chance to talk with him as the people you see at the background of the portrait were playing the drums very enthusiasticlly, so I could barely hear. I was really surprised when he told me he was from the city but came from New Mexico just to show the devotion to Saint Lawrence; I was not aware that matachines are also very popular in New Mexico, but arriving home I did a search and read that the tradition is really spread also to Las Cruces and Albuquerque. ■


[Español]  Esta mañana escuché en las noticias que las fiestas de San Lorenzo estaban por iniciar hoy. Es el santo mas venerado en la frontera e incluso una iglesia se construyó en su honor, y afortunadamente esta iglesia estaba en mi camino hoy por lo que me detuve al ver que ya había mucha congregación en las calles alrededor de la edificación. San Lorenzo fue diácono y tuvo el trabajo de tesorero de la Iglesia Católica en la era de las prosecuciones Valerianas que posteriormente lo llevaron a morir torturado asado en una parrilla el 10 de Agosto del 258.

En esta iglesia conocí a este "Matachin". Los matachines son muy populares en ambas ciudades pues son bailarines religiosos que veneran a Dios, la Virgen o Santos, así que estan siempre presentes en estas celebraciones. Tuve poca oportunidad de hablar con el, pues la gente que se ve al fondo del retrato estaba tocando sus tambores de manera muy entusiasta, por lo que apenas podía escuchar. Me sorprendió que me dijera que era de la ciudad pero que había venido de Nuevo México para mostrar la devoción por San Lorenzo; no estaba conciente de que los matachines son tambien muy populares por allá, pero al llegar a casa hice una búsqueda y leí que la tradición realmente esta muy extendida hasta Las Cruces y Albuquerque. ■

Cotton Candy | Algodonero

[Español]  Hablando de conexión... y suerte, justo el viernes por la noche estaba pensando que sería maravilloso si pudiera tomar el retrato del vendedor de algodones de azúcar más famoso de la región, puesto que es bastante conocido en ambas ciudades. Y cuan grande fue mi sorpresa al encontrármelo en un festival local al que asistí, me acerqué y amablemente aceptó mi petición de tomar su fotografía.

Deberían ver el entusiasmo y alegría con que realiza su trabajo vendiendo algodones en todo tipo de eventos deportivos o festivales, pueden encontrarlo trabajando donde sea, siendo también conocido por su frase: "¿Van a querer o qué?". Es muy amigable y si tienen la oportunidad de realmente hablar con él, se darán cuenta que es muy listo y maduro.

¡¡Y el algodón de azúcar es definitivamente el mejor!! Adquieranle uno si tienen oportunidad, no se arrepentirán. ■


[English]  Speaking of connection... and luck, just on friday night I was thinking that it should be marvelous if I could take a portrait of the most famous Cotton Candy Maker of the region, since he is well known in both cities. And how big was my surprise to ran into him while at a local fest I attended, I approached him and he kindly accepted the request to take a photograph.

You should see the enthusiasm and happiness he puts into his job selling cotton candy at any kind of sporting events or festivals, you can find him working everywhere, being also known by his phrase: "¿Van a querer o qué?" or "Will you want or what?" (sort of the best translation I can make). He is very friendly and if you ever have the chance to really talk with him, you will notice that he is also clever and mature.

And the cotton candy is definitely the best!! Get one from him if you have a chance, you will not regret it. ■
